In attempting to explain viewBox to folks, I've developed a pair of examples
http://granite.sru.edu/~ddailey/svg/viewBox0.svg (no viewBox) http://granite.sru.edu/~ddailey/svg/viewBox1.svg (viewBox) In the second, everything is calibrated to the same dimensions: text, path and ellipse. In part, to compensate for differences in font-rendering by the different browsers, and in part to confine the text closely to the ellipse, I've used textLength="20" and lengthAdjust="spacingAndGlyphs". Unfortunately Firefox doesn't yet support this approach to text flow. But in the other browsers, the second example has the text fit inside both the ellipse and the path at all screen sizes and aspect ratios - including, presumably cell phones (which I haven't had the chance to verify). Questions: 1. Any ideas when Firefox is likely to implement lengthAdjust and textLength? 2. Do you know a scriptless workaround that would accomplish the same effect and work across browsers (with script one could measure the screen and then measure the rendered text and then rescale it accordingly)? 3. Other than the obvious problem that certain fonts might not retain legibility through this sort of distortion of aspect ratio, do you see any other problems with the general approach?
