the workaround is to set the canvas opacity to 0 for each pixel
however is there a standards reason that:
doc.getElementById("myCanvas").setElementByIdNS(null, "visibility",
"hidden")
does not hide the canvas?
ie the canvas is a foreignObject (xhtml) in an SVG file
