Ther doesn't have to be according to the SVG specification

Firefox introduced a special imageRendering setting called -moz-crisp-edges. 
Opera and Webkit have similar variants: 
https://developer.mozilla.org/En/CSS/Image-rendering

Using these is the correct way to prevent resampling.
