I got no reply from the author yet, lets wait.
Ctype stuff there was in pre-POSIX (and even pre-BSD4.3) old times state, 
but luckily enough it affect only several edge cases in FreeBSD.
Most unpleasant bug which was the reason I start to look there was all 
8bit chars highlighting due to passing negative chars to waddch().
