mknod is used on devfs as a way to 'undelete' devfs node. You may do
rm /dev/node
and then
mknod /dev/node ...
would restore it.
Also, for UFS or other filesystems which are exported by NFS, mknod is
useful to provide device nodes for non-FreeBSD clients.
