I (kinda) knew I shouldn't have tried to do this real quick before leaving for a trip. I reverted the change and I'll fix the concerns including the commit message when I'm back in a week. Now I also want to know what exactly is going on in bash there, the difference between the explicit named pipe and bash'es construct is unexplained.
