Yeah, references can be local to your own spec or remote to external specs.

Keep in mind the references still need to follow the JSON Reference structure 
still (using # where needed).

imagine having a swagger spec including this line:
$ref: "#/definitions/Person" 

--> can I have this:

$ref: "https://mycompany.com/definitionsrepository/definitions/Person";

?
