I'm probably the last person on earth to find this, but for Windows 2000/XP users who want to get sound from DOS games, you can't beat this for dirt simplicity:

I installed it, installed RAMPART, right-clicked on Rampart.exe in Windows Explorer, RUN FROM VDMS and there it was. Tip of the hat to Bitmasters for writing code in '92 that runs on a modern machine w/o a hitch too J
VDMS supports MIDI through your soundcard. The general MIDI of most sound cards is OK… For people who have cards that support SoundFonts (Audigy, SB Live, etc.), look for a soundfont set that has better resolution than the set that comes w/the card. I rather like these guys. They're steep, but the drums are **AWESOME**. (I didn't get these to play games, I wanted to convert a slew of MIDI files to WAV so I could listen to them on a CD player. Still, they kick for games that support MIDI, like "Sword of the Samurai".)

I did a quick search of the mailing list archives and didn't see a reference to VDMS so I just want to double-check.
