Conditional compilation is in because it is simply the best solution
available. Comparing the 3:

browser sniffing:
- reliability: easy to mimic
- future proof: probably, but we have seen issues with changed
identifiers already

the new trick:
- reliability: still needs to be proven
- future proof: very uncertain, one update by MS and Flash is killed
in IE

conditional compilation:
- reliability: very, because it is a feature test
- future proof: confirmed by IE dev team

I am aware that some software cannot deal with IE conditional
compilation, however it is also one of the realities of today that IE
is a pain and that certain proprietary features are here to stay.
