If you use firefox install the html validator plugin

install firebug also

view your page in firefox after installing the plugins. The html validation
plugin will list errors in the page (having these correct will help
consistency across browser - not specially swfobject)

firebug will display javascript errors if any. The net tab of firebug will
show what the swf is loading (http requests made by the page)
