thats exactly why I asked instead of filing a bug. after hitting my
head against this for half the evening, I realized this morning that I
don't, in fact, have the latest plugin of flash on my windows box. I
dont know why this would result in firefox not even trying to make a
GET for the swf, but updating the plugin makes swfobject work.

case closed, I guess :)
