This doesn't sound like any fault of SWFObject, but just a
Chrome anomaly with the disabling of plugins and the iframe combo.

If you actually uninstall Flash player by using the official uninstaller  (
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe)
and then run your page, I am sure you will see the alt content as
expected
(which is the actualy use case you are trying to test for - a user without a
Flash player).

Keep in mind that Chrome can be pretty funky about re-installing Flash, so
only uninstall if you really feel you want to test this on your own machine.

(basically, you can assured that 1000's of developers and many more sites
are using swfobject, and that it does what it is supposed to :)
