it's all about a label with a bevel or etch border sitting in the south of you're main JFrame content pane.
or better, a panel with the above boders added to the same spot, with a clock GUI component on added to it's east and a JLabel as a status on the west. You can make a Clock GUI out of a JLabel with a Thread running to change the clock on the system time. make sure you SwingUtilities.invokelater(runnable) your clock update...
