if I add a KeyListener to a Jtextfield

I get a KeyEvent on a keyPress().

is there anyway to get the position in the JTextField of that from the event?

say, I type "kjdflefgd"  I'm hope that I can type the second "d" and actually get the position of that d and compare it to a mask of allowable characters in the line above.

I'm looking to format JTextFields.  Does anyone have any good examples for say, MAC addresses and IP addresses?
