If you're still interested in getting to the bottom of this,
one more thing you could try is to enable printing of gc
messages.  In JDK1.3, it's "java -verbose:gc"; it might be
something different in 1.2 or 1.1.  Pipe that output to a
file or Emacs buffer; it'll be huge.  (heh)  Then see if
those Strings which used to be in the JTextArea were being
gc'ed properly.  I suspect they weren't, but I have no idea
why, other than that it's probably a bug somewhere in the
code for whatever Document subclass is used by JTextArea.
