Unless you want to do the "chunked" transfer-decoding by hand, this
should better be HTTP/1.0. You can then also leave out the "Connection:
close", because 1.0 didn't support keep-alive. So, for the record, the
correct syntax is

  GET / HTTP/1.0
  Host: www.blaufenster.ch

And he just wanted to show that the server was available.

You mean 0.9. Apache and most other webservers degrade gracefully. The
problem in the example above was the lowercase "get". Here's a proof
that backwards compatibility always works:
