There are indeed situations where you don't get around of using
private address space.  We're using private address space for
our docsis cable tv plants. (for the mgmt IPs of the modems)

This means the headend-controller also gets a private address.
Unfortunately on the CISCO Headends you need to use this
address as the primary address of the interface, which leads to
those 172.16.xx.xx IPs which our users see in the trace.
