As far as I understood, the current IDN solution is based on the idea that the client application converts everything to punycode before asking the name servers, so that the DNS infrastructure doesn't need to be changed. So, as soon as e-mail clients support punycode conversion, they can send mail to IDN domains. IMHO, all this is a horrible kludge that will bite back soon enough, and it builds borders where there haven't been any until now, as everyone had agreed on 7bit ASCII as the smallest common denominator.
