John,

As you may know, I visited St. Helena in the South Atlantic last March as part
of a Queen Mary 2 cruise.  The day we came ashore, the entire island went on
holiday.  The schools were all closed so the school buses could be commandeered
to shuffle tourists from the landing to the various sites on the island.

I was interviewed live on the real Radio St. Helena as station manager Gary
Walters did a "man-on-the street" remote from the dock.  I have pictures if
him, the RSH remote bus, engineer Tony Moore, views of Jamestown, and the big
turtle who may have met Napoleon while he vacationed there between 1815 and
1821.

I also have a live recording of Gary Walters interviewing me and expressing
shock that somebody who actuall heard their SW broadcasts had come to see
them. The interview lasted about 7 minutes.

My photos begin in Capetown and end at sunset as we sailed away to Rio.
Jamestown at sunset as seen from the sea is quite beautiful.

I plan to encourage folks who have visited other countries via shortwave radio
to sell all their radios if necessary to get the money and travel to places
that they have only visited vicariously via the radio before.  I will have some
information on how to get there via the mail boat and maybe even the new
airport the British government voted this year to build on the southeast side
of the island so the mail boat can be retired.

St. Helena is an ideal place for a winter escape from the northern hemisphere
especially if you don't need big city distractions like nightclubs and casinos.

Joe

Unbelievable!  It's that time again!  So, let us take this opportunity to
invite one and all to be a part of the 2011 Winter SWL Fest program on March
4-5, 2010 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in fashionable Plymouth Meeting,
Pennsylvania, the city that thinks it's where the Pilgrims landed.  (If you
find Plymouth Rock there, check the proof rating on your flask.)  That's a mere
86 days away as I type this.

As you know, one of the centerpieces of the Fest weekend is our line-up of
informative and entertaining forums.  How do we get them? These excellent
sessions are put together and presented by people just like you--people with a
deep and abiding interest in radio and a willingness to share what they've
experienced, learned and know.

So, how about it?  Have you a topic that you think Fest participants will find
interesting and would like to present?  Tell us about it.

Your role will be to lead a one hour session forum.  That means preparing about
a half-hour presentation that leaves plenty of time for audience questions and
interaction.

And as a gesture of appreciation (and perhaps some measure of small
compensation for your efforts), the Fest will comp your registration fees if
your proposal is accepted by the Organizing Committee for inclusion in the 2010
program.

Make your suggestion/proposal to John Figliozzi at <[email protected]>.  If
you have any questions, we'll be happy to discuss them with you. And don't
hesitate...from personal experience we've learned that people tend to unfairly
minimize their own abilities in this area.  We know you'll be great...but you
have to let us in on what you're thinking!  We promise a quick turnaround on
your proposal.

Be a part of the 2011 Winter SWL Fest program!
