2011 Fest Forums (Final as of 2/14/11)

(Still subject to change, but not as much. All forums one hour except Shortwave Shindig and the Surprise Event.)

Friday 4 March

1. 09.00 - Stories from Behind the Counter – Rob De Santos. Rob shares some humorous and instructional stories from his recent experience as a salesman for a well-known retailer in shortwave and amateur radio. The viewfrom the "other side" of the sales desk is full of the unusual and even bizarre. The names have been changed to protect the guilty.

2. 10.30 - QSLing Tristan Without Hearing It – Dan Robinson. Our intrepid VOA correspondent discusses the art of QSL collecting—only it’s via eBay with a look at methods, key sellers, and a lot of displays of some really nice stuff.

3. 13.30 - What I Did On My St. Helena Vacation – Joe Buch. Joe starts our vicarious tour in Capetown, S.A. sailing to St. Helena on the Queen Mary 2. We’ll see the RSH dockside broadcast team, remote studio bus, scenes of Jamestown and the island, and an audio clip of a 7 minute interview about how the RSH SW broadcast resulted in at least two tourists visiting their lovely island. Ends with a pretty view of the island in the setting sunlight as we sail for Rio. A special guest may even stop in via Skype.

4. 15.00 - Scanning Then, Scanning Now... Scanning Forevermore? - Tom Swisher. What was, what is, and what may be. Where was scanning, where is it now and where is it going? The Scum will look at the current state of the art and where we may be going over the next 10 or 20 years. Back by popular demand. (Well, at least Tom is.)

5. 16.30 - The Wiki as a Hobby Research Tool – Mike Agner. What a wiki is, how you can use it for education, web publishing targeted to your interests, and touring the wiki at RadioReference - one of the largest hobby wikis in the world with well over 5000 articles. This wiki encompasses topics from MW, HF, amateur radio, scanners, TV/FM, satellites, equipment, antennas as well as hearing, and perhaps talking to the astronauts on the International Space Station. This forum is for HF, amateurs, scannists and anyone else interested in utilizing a central resource for these and other radio-related interests.

6. 20.30 - The Shortwave Shindig - David Goren and Friends. Bring your favorite tuning oil and relax to the soothing sounds of the shortwave spectrum from the Shortwaveology Archive with lively quizzes, livelier performances, and special presentations.

Saturday 5 March

7. 09.00 - All About Continuous Wave – Skip Arey. Start with the Morse roots and work all the way up through modern WSPR techniques. The shortwave angle includes using worldwide CW beacons to discover propagation paths for all forms of HF.

8. 10.30 - Make Your Own Show – Greg Majewski. …Shows us how to produce a program using readily available computer tools, and featuring a show he produced and got to air on WBCQ before the Winterfest.

9. 13.30 - The Year in Pirate Radio - George Zeller . Hundreds of unlicensed broadcasters pepper the shortwave bands (and other frequencies) every year. Some have even been known to pepper the airwaves of Kulpsville in the past. This year they might use more power to reach Plymouth Meeting. Zeller and friends hold our traditional discussion of what happened among the pirates this year. Unlike some other shortwave broadcasters, pirates are just as active on shortwave as they ever were. Why? We will ponder this issue, as we also discuss the brand new North American Pirate Radio Hall of Fame inaugural class of inductees. Reports go to P.O. Box 1, Belfast, NY 14895.

10. 15.00 – The Prometheus Radio Project - Maggie Avener. With its roots in pirate radio, The Prometheus Radio Project is a non-profit organization founded by a small group of radio activists in 1998. Prometheus builds, supports, and advocates for community radio stations —effectively working for democratization of the airwaves. And it’s just had its biggest success to date.

11. 16.30 - Special Premiere Film Screening with Q&A! - Details TBA. We bet this has gotten your attention. It’s even won a major film award, so you won’t want to miss it.
