Fellow festers,

I'm very disappointed that I will be unable to attend this year's fest as
planned. For the past two weeks, I've been fighting and (now) recovering from a
bout of pneumonia. While my X-rays indicate I'm on the upside and should be back
to my normal routine next week, I'm still far too weak to handle the trip and
the Fest. It's been many years since I've missed a Fest and I wish I could make
this one.

Have a great time and see you next year!

If you wish to reply, please do fellow Festers a favor and reply OFF-LIST.
Thanks and have fun,

FYI...the hotel is requiring us to use their operations for 100% of
our food & beverage needs this year.

Their costs for beer are much higher than what we would pay for it, so
we opted to keep somewhat of a lid on registration costs by
eliminating the cost of alcohol from our purchases.

Their costs for snacks & soda are higher as well...but manageable...
we'll have a "kitty" set up in the hospitality room if you feel led to
specifically donate to hospitality costs. Of course, you could also
just by a few more raffle tickets...

As for buying beer in the neighborhood of the Fest, remember that
Pennsylvania's alcohol laws are odd -- you can't buy beer or wine at
your local supermarket.

Here are some options:

Beer -

The Whole Foods Market across the road sells beer.

The Bottle Shop, attached to Capone's Restaurant, is at 224 West
Germantown Pike, Norristown - about 4 miles northwest of the hotel.
Has a reputation of a nice microbrew selection. Open until 1 AM
Thurs, 2 AM Fridays & Saturdays. You can buy up to two six-packs each
trip.

If you want case quantities in PA, shop at a beer distributor.
Closest to the Fest is San Beverage, 200 West Ridge Pike,
Conshohocken. They're probably open as late as 9 PM or so.

Wine & Spirits -

For wine & distilled spirits, you need a "Wine & Spirits" store, part
of our wonderful state-owned system. Nearest one to Fest is at 2927
Swede Road, Norristown. It's one of the "Premium Collection"
locations, and will probably be open until 10 PM.

Perhaps some of our more local folks can chime in here...

See you (egad!) in a day or so!

The Whole Foods across the road which is attached to Plymouth Meeting Mall
actually has a very good selection of craft beers in you're into that kind
of thing. Samples available.... lots of good prepared foods there also.
This may or may not be up to date, but if you're a fan of craft beer it's
worthwhile checking out. Yea, I know, PA liquor laws are archaic. Or,
bring your own.

Rich, thanks for the heads-up on the new dictatorial culinary regime.

I've seen other hotels pull this scam with other conference groups
I've been involved with. After the conference establishes a hotel as
a repeat venue and everyone is comfortable with there, the hotel
starts turning the screws and nickle & dimeing the group for
everything conceivable without fair warning.

So what, exactly, are the new rules the hotel is imposing on 'fest
guests--as opposed to NASWA the organization?

Will 'fest guests be permitted to bring their own foods & beverages
(incl beer, etc) into the Hospitality Room and into the Atrium?

Is there a quantity limit to how much food & beverages each 'fest
guest can bring into the Hospitality Room or into the Atrium?

Is there a prohibition on 'fest guests sharing their own foods &
beverages with other 'fest guests in the Hospitality Room or the Atrium?

Please advise, and thanks much.
