Of the old four horsemen of the shortwave apocalypse. Gene
Scott was the first to go, then Pete Peters. And now Mr.
Camping has finally fallen. Brother Stair is the last one
riding.
Much to my surprise, both Scott and Peters have found a way
to broadcast from the grave. Most days, you can still hear
recordings of them any day of the week across the shortwave
dial. And Gene Scott's former radio "ministry" must still be
going strong in some way, because to blast across the
horizon on 6060kHz and another frequency or two. His former
porn star widow is even more cryptic than Gene, but not
nearly as compelling (or as much fun). But just to keep the
programming interesting, they drop in archives of his old
programs here and there. For the good times.
And I still hear ol' Pete Peters too, as well a couple of
his younger acolytes who have taken on the mantle of his
hateful "identity ministry". But while Camping made
headlines over the years with his dates of destruction and
his declaration of the "post church era," there wasn't a
charismatic bone in his body. And it's kinda hard to imagine
Family Radio actually investing in reruns of "Open Forum."
And speaking of investments, I believe Family Radio is a far
bigger enterprise than the aforementioned ministries. Even
with some recent selling, there's still too much money left
on the table. Someone will figure out that all those radio
properties are just going to decrease in value over the next
few years, and they'll cash it all in and dissolve into
another online religious cult/ministry out there. Perhaps
they'll also buy time on other stations, but recordings of
the shamed and no longer living Harold Camping probably
won't be in the mix. But who knows?
Eighty year old Brother Stair still hangs on. And his need
to be on the radio everywhere and all the time remains
unchecked, even if he's lost of good deal of affiliates over
the years. I predict he's busy making plans and investing
money in his own radio immortality, and that his creaky old
barking will linger in the static far longer than his
goat-like human shell will actually hover over the
microphone. He's an overcomer.

Ed, I think it will be tough for FR. Many ministries of this ilk
exist due to the drive and personality of their founders, and, once
the founder is gone, the ministry becomes rudderless.
While I have not seen reports on their financial condition, I
speculate that since the passing of the October and December 2011
dates, FR has been living off its asset sales - after all, FR invested
in FM long before FM became a popular radio medium.
Camping's theology wasn't mainstream Fundamentalist Christian either.
Much like Joseph Smith some 180 years ago, Camping claimed that
traditional church-based Christianity had lost its way, and Camping
had unique perspectives and insights as to how Christianity should be
practiced.
So FR will probably continue to quietly recede into the background,
eventually dissolving in an environment of indifference...
