Hello,

The frequency counter with IF offset method was used in the first generation HF
receivers with a digital display, like a Yaesu FRG-7700, or Kenwood R-1000.
More modern radios have the radio processor drive the frequency display
directly. One reason is different offsets are required based on Mode, Passband
Tuning, and Filters.

A digital volume control knob can use a analog-to-digital-converter, but the
common method for knob tuning is not really analog. The knob is hooked to an
encoder that outputs two digital signals to indicate knob rotation and
direction. This method has been used in radios for years.

The Watkins Johnston Receivers planned for the listening lounge have a nice
heavy tuning knob, but the knob is still fastened to a digital encoder feeding
the radio processor. There is also a numeric keypad and two skew buttons to set
the receive frequency.

It is great that they integrated more functions into the chip so even the
low-end radios can have a tuning knob.
