OK, I know we are just back from the Fest and that everyone in recovering from travel etc but I'm all fired up and boy, are you gonna know it :)
I had a nice conversation with Tina at the Fest. It seems that she and I have a common non radio interest in Astronomy. I believe that we are not the only 2 astronomers in our clan? One of the experiments currently in the queue for deployment at my local astronomy club (http://uacnj.org) is a EZSID receiver. Short explanation is that it's a VLF RX that tunes from 0Hz through to about 150KHz or so. Its purpose is to monitor Sudden Ionosperic Disturbances. The set up is very simple, A small amplifier and loop antenna is connected directly to a PC sound card. Software is then run on the PC logging some data and forwarding it to some place that cares about such things. Given a wide enough sound card one can capture stations all the way up to 192KHz using all the usual sound card IF SDR methods. I know that listening to whistlers and other natural radio events is something that many SWL folks find interesting but for the purposes of SID we are interested in the man made signals around 17-40KHz. During a SID it is likely that the relative signal strength will greatly improve for a short period of time as our Ionosphere get whacked by some sort of solar event. The collected data can then help determine the sort of event it was. Is anyone else doing anything similar? Mark
