SWLFest speaker slots are very limited and valuable. So I think any
person who wants one should be required to submit a detailed proposal
themselves to the SWLfest organizers stating specifically what they'd
like to talk about. Automatically granting a SWLfest speaking slot
to a group of people that no member of has lifted a finger to step up
and submit a detailed proposal for seems a like a waste of precious
time resources at the SWLfest.
I pay for my SWLfest ticket to hear informative content that someone
took the time to adequately plan a presentation of. If there's a
scanner talk then I'd like to hear a detailed presentation about new
developments in the hobby, such as how new low-cost SDR's (like the
SDRPlay) and free software are being developed and used by hobbyists
to demodulate and record APCO25.DMR/Mototrbo/NXDN/ProVoice/etc and
other digital modulation schemes being used by more and more public
safety agencies.
If no member of the 'Scanner Scum' (a very knowledgeable group of
people, BTW) is willing and able promptly submit a detailed proposal
for the good use of a valuable time slot, then I'd like to see that
time slot used more productively by someone else. Just because
something is a "tradition" doesn't mean it's in the best interest of
the SWLFest. Better content will bring in more paid attendees, which
are badly needed for the survival of this wonderful event.
I'd be interested in reading anyone else's opinions about this. The
SWLfest has some excellent content, but should any of its valuable
speaking slots be reserved for any group or person who hasn't
bothered to submit a good plan to use it?

Neither Tom Swisher or myself are able to make it to the Fest this year.
If none of the other attending Scum want to host, I believe Eric
Cottrell expressed some interest in doing it. Eric certainly knows a
myriad of aspects on Scanning, if he would like to do it, he has the
official endorsement of the Scanner Scum (not that he needs it).

Still waiting for someone to step up and lead this annual
session. It's been a tradition, so we're holding a slot open for
it. However, if we don't hear from anyone in the scanner community
in the next week or so, we may have to do without one this
year. So, just let us know, ok.
