Hello,

I am charging up the portables today and preparing for the Fest. I have the UHF DMR simplex channels programmed as well as the NJ-TRBO talkgroups in my XPR from last year. It was neat talking on TRI-STATE to a ham on one of the New Jersey barrier islands while I was on the NJ turnpike close to the PA turnpike exit.

An alternative to DMR Simplex is the Local Repeater talkgroup (Timeslot 1 Talkgroup 9) on the Roxborough repeater. This will allow local communications and still free up the repeater for TRI-STATE on Timeslot 2.

Oh, I agree for on the road Tri State TG 31360 is ideal.

OK Dan. FWIW, I was thinking of 31360 TriState for those driving in from the mid-Atlantic states. Point taken for 441 in the hotel.

Last year we used 146.55 MHz FM and it worked out nicely. I made quite a few contacts there.

As far as DMR...you could program in 441.000 MHz, TG 99, TS 1 CC1 and use simplex since you're all in the same place! That is one of the recommended DMR simplex frequencies. http://www.va3xpr.net/dmr-simplex-frequencies/

Tom, while I know that TG 31360 is the best for you because you already have it programmed in, I'm not sure that all the folks who use Tri State during their daily commutes would be too interested in SWL Fest chat about Pancho and purple paper for 3 days typing up "their" TG. But that is just my opinion.

I've setup a D-Star callsign routing group which Festers are free to use. It is live now and it is called SWLFEST. If you are bringing your Zumspot/Jumbospot etc it can already do callsign routing. Replace the CQCQCQ that is usually in the UR Call field with "SWLFEST" and it will just work. To terminate use "SWLFESTT". I'll leave it up through the end of next week, but maybe it will stick around if I see it getting some use. For more on Smart Routing Groups see http://www.k2dls.net/blog/2019/02/19/adventures-in-callsign-routing/.

We will not be able to join the Fest this year because of a conflict with other interesting plans. But here's wishing for a good gathering of the radio active from me and Tina.

The recent discussion on choosing a fest comm frequency--2m or 70cm--was confusing. Frankly, I don't recall seeing a consensus. Please advise. <grin>

The wide-area N3KZ 70cm analog network is off the air, perhaps for good. There has been ongoing nonsense--deliberate interference caused by troublemakers--and the management pressed the red kill button.

The PARA W3PHL network is probably the next largest linked analog network. Look at http://para.buxcom.net and/or https://www.repeaterbook.com for information.

For those on DMR, probably the Brandmeister talkgroup (TG) TriState 31360 -- https://wiki.brandmeister.network/index.php/TalkGroup/31360 --is the most convenient for festees to use. The TrIState TG is on a host of DMR repeaters. See http://www.wr3irs.com and http://www.n2jti.net for repeaters, color codes and time slots. The Philadelphia 440.650 repeater in Roxborough (near City Line Ave and I-76) should easily provide coverage at the hotel.

If you are using a hotspot and a VZW Jetpack (or equivalent) in the car or in a go-bag, then simply add 31360 to your codeplug.
