Hi Matt,

I share your concern about the efficacy of a Listening Lounge at this years' SWL Fest. It's been one of my favorite features of the conference. For decades, the SWL Fest was held at the Best Western Hotel in Kulpsville (Landsdale exit of 476-N) where our listening lounge was in a 2nd floor conference room with a large window that couldn't be opened.

Hotel management got wise to folks who made a hole in their unopenable hole room window screen to drop a longwire antenna out of it. Stiff fines were levied upon guests who left a hole in their window screen. The management even posted a sign at the front desk during 'Fests warning us that leaving a hole in our window screen wound earn us a stiff fine. Ah, memories...

When the 'Fest was moved to the Hilton DoubleTree Suites in Plymouth Meeting for financial reasons (its new management decided to start price-gouging us, despite our bringing them lots of business every year) I noticed the spacious top-floor Presidential Suite was being renovated and had an accessible balcony--just below the roof. And I found a way to access the roof and found antenna-mounting options and a way to drop feedlines to the balcony. A perfect venue for our future Listening Lounge needs!

So I suggested to Rich and John that they look into renting the Presidential Suite as a listening lounge for future 'fests. To their credit, they did that and made it a combination Listening Lounge and Hospitality Suite, which was a wonderful success. Volunteers set it up with tables and refreshments every year, antennas were erected on the balcony and rooftop, and people generously brought and set up their impressive receivers--some of which many of us only dreamed of having access to. I will miss that dearly.

I'm going to drive up to the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Fort Washington and do some covert reconnaissance to explore potential options for a Listening Lounge there, and will report them here. With luck, we'll have at least one usable option.

To quote veteran SWL'er Mick Jagger, "You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, well, you might just find, You get what you need!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef9QnZVpVd8

Also, will there be a listening lounge? It doesn't appear the hotel has any balconies or obvious places for antennas.

Sometime in the next week or two, I’ll go ahead and create the zoom meeting and that can generate calendar entries. Probably also create an ics file for folks that don’t speak Google.

Registration for the 2024 "Winter SWL Fest" is now available!
The Fest will be a combination in-person and Zoom event, and will be held at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania - just north of Philadelphia. We have a block of rooms set aside for the Fest at a special rate; this block will only be available until April 18th, 2024. After that date our special rate may no longer be available, and the hotel itself may sell out. In-person registration is limited to 65 participants, so register early if you don't want to get shut out; there is no limit to the number of Zoom participants.
Start your process at the Winter SWL Fest website:

You can find out more information there, and access the group reservation link for the hotel and also register for either the in-person or the Zoom event. We apologize if you're seeing this announcement in multiple places; we wanted to get the news out there as quickly as possible since we have tight deadlines this year.
We look forward to seeing you there!
