If you want a well-lit photograph in which *everyone* can be picked out, why not have everyone gather in front of the smiley barn, have people take a conventional shot *and* additional photographers take shots from the second and third floor windows directly opposite?
Should be able to get some good ones that way, the shots from on high should produce pictures that everyone can be picked out in. This assumes that the weather cooperates, btw.
