There are similarities. Geocaches are often found along orienteering courses.
With a good topo map and serious compass, you could probably get yourself close enough to a cache to have a good chance of finding it. Still, the lure of using billions of dollars worth of satellites to find a Tupperware tub in the woods is what makes geocaching so much fun. Skip, would you consider orienteering related to geocaching?
