Unfortunately one must be a subscriber to read the article. Much of the article deals with startup Slacker Inc., which has a device that receives content from satellites and also via the Internet, but stores it -- like a DVR -- it is not intended for live playback. Car devices are in the works: "Subscribers will be able to drive around with a docked Slacker and receive a stream of songs beamed down from a satellite and stored on the hard drive. Once the antenna picks up the satellite signals, Slacker says it will transmit the songs to the device, which will save appropriate songs and reject those that don't match a listener's taste. " For now, news, traffic, sports, and weather are not part of the mix -- since the intent isn't to deliver a live service. However, this concept -- onboard digital storage -- is something I've predicted for about 5 years now.
