As a boy I imagined that to be sound of the engines heard through the open door of a military cargo plane with the mic stuck in the open position. Rather I think it was actually some type of image transmission. There's a nice collection of these at http://www.astrosurf.com/luxorion/qsl-audiofiles.htm. though none of the sounds I tried are the one that we're remembering. Somebody on this list undoubtedly knows the sound.

The idea to play SW noises sounds great. As long as I can remember there was the sound of something like an airplane engine on shortwave, never could figure out what that was, maybe when I attend the 'fest someone will know what it is.

You might want to recruit during the Scanner Scum or Pirate forums.

Somehow those two groups come to mind when one thinks of "animal
    sounds."

I believe Myke Weiskopf played this at the first Listening Lounge we
had at the Fest...it is indeed very clever!

...and Eric Cotrell has a clip he played at that first Listening
Lounge as well, which I think was made by the folks who produced the
    media show Spectrum.

    That clip is even funnier.

Speaking of interesting sound clips. The Listening Lounge is always
looking for unusual and historic sounds from across the RF spectrum.
Please bring them to our Friday evening session. Also, if you've got
a box full of shortwave airchecks from a misspent youth, moldering
away in the attic, less us know, we'd like to rescue and digitize
    them for you.

    Hello,

That was the "WWV Jingle Package" played on Spectrum. I recorded
    it off
the show and rearranged the comments of the Spectrum hosts to give
    it a
better intro. I have talked to Dave Marthouse over IRC and he would
like to come to a fest. He is busy these days running WODI-1230 AM
    down
    in Brookneal, Virginia.

I have some other little bits that I might bring. I have a few
    humorous
station IDs and there is one of my favorite pieces done by Stan
    Freberg
about "Does anybody remember radio?". I find it interesting that a lot
of subjects Stan Freberg did stuff about in the 1950s and 1960s are
    still valid today.

Dave Marthouse joined us a bunch of years ago when he was hosting
Spectrum. I know John Abbemont keeps up with him on a regular basis.

I talk to Dave every so often also-not as often as I would like. He
called me several months after Ken died, asking how I was doing. He
expressed his interest also at that time about coming to a future
    Fest.
