You're thinking of WFDU 89.5, another radio animal entirely. Their
student read newscasts are unintentionally hilarious for the
incredible mispronounciations of newsmakers and place names.
WFMU used to be in East Orange, NJ affialiated with the now defunct
Upsala College. 'FMU's station manager had the foresight to raise
money and buy the license from the college just before it went
bankrupt. Then they moved to Jersey City. I think they would admit to
serving both New Jersey and the New York Metropolitan area.
Certainly, they're one of the linchpins of the NYC music scene.

I think that WFMU would object to being placed in NY. They are at

Not sure if anyone has mentioned WFMU.org as one of the cool
stations available on the Net.
This NY station appears to be devoted entirely to eccentric music,
much of it by artists of dubious talent. And its website swag
department -- titled "Buy Crap From Our Store!" has a large
assortment of SWLFest-appropriate casual wear.
On another subject:
http://radioberlininternational.blog.co.uk/
offers a recording of RBI's last transmission. Fascinating and
haunting.
