Okay. It wasn't clear to me that the parentheses were intended as part of
the token itself.

As I read those examples it looks to me as if the multi-character token is
intended to be an n-/m-dash. They offset parenthetical comments or at
least that is how I read the Norwegian with my Swedish eyes. (A real
Norwegian or Swede might say otherwise, of course.) It could be that they
are marking the inclusion of intra-text notes.
