Additional wishlist for autotools / waf in relation to testsuite. Add --with-shtests (or replace --with-tests) configure flags
With those flags above $make check (or waf check) should run a non-failing test-suite (sh, cppunit, sh & cppunit, sh & subset of cppunit).
