The file bible.xml within http://mcepl.fedorapeople.org/tmp/bible.xml.gz seems to be not a text file but a binary!
In fact, it needs to be renamed as bible.xml.tar and decompressed yet again to get the real bible.xml If you double compress something using tar then gzip, it's best to indicate that in the filename!
