The gcc compiler is no longer shipped with Xcode. Instead it comes with the LLVM project's reworking of it. http://llvm.org/ and https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/CompilerTools/Conceptual/LLVMCompilerOverview/_index.html The claim is that LLVM produces better object code than its gcc equivalent. The Xcode "command line tools" options will expose the installed compiler and linker for use outside of Xcode, e.g. for hacking with eclipse.
