Earlier this week I left a comment on the webserver of Wisconsin Public
Television (WPT), one of two PBS networks I can receive on my local cable given
that I live on the border with that state, complaining about their substitution
World Focus for BBC News. Here is the key paragraph in their response, which
just arrived:
"On Monday, Oct. 6, Worldfocus began airing on WPT at 5:30 p.m. Worldfocus is a
30-minute global news program based in New York City. It is an endeavor
undertaken by a large consortia of national news organizations working with
contributors worldwide. We at Wisconsin Public Television wanted to give our
viewers the opportunity to view the work that is a result of this
groundbreaking coalition. In addition to the high quality of this exciting news
program, part of the decision to make the change from BBC World News at this
timeslot was due to the move of BBC World News' production and distribution to
Los Angeles. After that move, BBC World News has consistently experienced a
number of technical issues with their delivery of the program and we could no
longer rely on a daily broadcast. Worldfocus was able to offer a more timely
and reliable feed at the 5:30 timeslot than BBC World News. WPT Director of
Programming Garry Danny said, "While Worldfocus is
stylistically different than BBC World News, it offers the same high quality
of news from around the world aimed at an American audience.""
