Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile
walk, while I’m “plodding along”. While there are thousands, perhaps tens of
thousands, of great podcasts from other sources, the ones sponsored via public
radio have been vetted through the worthy objectives of the medium. Here’s
what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these suggestions
— in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own enjoyment of
radio, our favorite medium.

“A Good Sign For the VOA?”
ON THE MEDIA - NPR and WNYC New York Public Media
Recently a surprising ruling came down from U.S. District Court Judge Royce C.
Lamberth. The Reagan-appointed judge found that Kari Lake - (formerly best
known as the loser of two state-wide races in Arizona), had acted unlawfully in
running the United States Agency for Global Media, the body that oversees Voice
of America and the handful of other government-assisted media outlets. Kari
Lake, wrote the judge "satisfies the requirements of neither the statute nor
the Constitution," potentially making all of her actions this past year null
and void. Lake, who once described herself to a gaggle of reporters as "your
worst fricking nightmare" told NPR that she would appeal the ruling. Last
spring February when Lake started slashing and burning the 80-year old service,
Micah spoke to Nicole Hemmer, a historian at Vanderbilt University to learn
about the history the VOA. (14”)

“Posh Water”
THE FOOD PROGRAMME - BBC Radio 4
Should we be taking water more seriously? The emergence of the water sommelier
would suggest so. Jaega Wise visits a Cheshire restaurant that now offers its
own water menu as well as a Peak District pub with a water bar and a borehole
to draw its own spring water. She talks to the co-founder of the Fine Waters
Academy Michael Mascha who believes that water should be appreciated as a
product with its own terroir and hears from Dr Natalie Lamb, a water industry
expert who has been trained to appreciate the virtues of tap water. Whether
hard or soft, still or sparkling - the Food Programme takes a closer look at
the liquid we all too often take for granted. (42”)

"A Win For Mr. Nobody!”
ON THE MEDIA - NPR and WNYC New York Public Media
Brooke Gladstone talks with Pasha Talankin, star and co-creator of the new
documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin. Pasha is a high school teacher who made
an incredibly vivid and detailed account of Putin’s efforts to indoctrinate
schoolchildren in Russia. (23”)

John Figliozzi
Editor, "The Worldwide Listening Guide”
11th EDITION, with comprehensive listings of radio programs on AM, FM,
shortwave, satellite radio, internet-wifi radio and podcasts, available from
universal-radio.com, amazon.com. amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, amazon.com.au

PLEASE NOTE: Times change and some things just get passed by. Such is the
case with THE WORLDWIDE LISTENING GUIDE. This 11th Edition will be its last.
Once the current crop of issues is sold, the series is sold out for good. For
35 years, starting with THE SHORTWAVE RADIOGUIDE, it has been my pleasure to
provide to select listeners a written record of some of the best programming
available on public media radio everywhere. The media landscape is changing —
much for the good, but some that’s concerning. This is especially true for the
jewel that is public service media. But it’s also clear that radio — all its
platforms — is de-emphasizing schedules and embracing the freeing capacity of
podcasting. It’s also clear that — happily — there are some fine accessible
and more timely resources for finding that public audio content available
online. So for the next few weeks I will be compiling some of the best of
those to share with you and provide places where you can still gain the
information that the WWLG has tried to provide for these many years. On to the
future!
