Dear All

This Wed, at 3.30, Justine McGill will talk on "The powerlessness of the powerful: Riots as counter-violence." in The Refectory.

At 2PM in the common room she will explain background to the paper for interested graduate students and others.

Here is an abstract:

Etienne Balibar draws upon concepts from Ancient Greek literature to structure his account of extreme violence and counter-violence as it appears in the contemporary world. In this paper, his theory is examined and extended to compare two contemporary cases of violence (or, arguably, “counter-violence”): riots in Indigenous communities in Australia and those that erupt from time to time in the immigrant communities living on the outskirts of French cities. While Balibar focuses on the way the violence of the state tends to cross over to become the violence of its victims, I shall argue that the impotence expressed in these cases of “counter-violence” also mirrors and infects the state, revealing or becoming its own weakness.

See you all there!
