Since 2004 we have run a series of Symposia at the University of Sydney, sponsored by that Universitys Department of Studies in Religion. These symposia have been devoted to exploring issues in contemporary philosophy of religion focused on what might be broadly considered practical philosophy. One of the major thoughts that has motivated them is the idea that philosophy of religion is more than merely an enquiry into the existence of God. Particularly it is more than an enquiry into the existence of one culturally and historically circumscribed conception of the divine. Further they are stimulated by the fact that the tendency, within philosophy, to ignore issue in religion, often in the hope that it will disappear, has simply led to a bourgeoning of texts, journals and indeed universities that both help to reinforce the theologically circumscribed conception of philosophy of religion and which display very little of the virtue of plurality. This current symposium focuses on issues within social philosophy and ethics and is centred around the visit to Sydney of Peter Jonkers, Professor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Catholic Theology, at the University of Tilburg.
