Dear All

This Wed 20 May in The Refectory, from 3.30 to 5,30, Mark Jago from Macquarie will be speaking to us on the following topic:

Epistemic Possibilities

Here's an abstract:

It’s intuitive to model the acquisition of new beliefs or new information as the ruling out of certain possibilities. On this picture, an agent’s state of knowledge or belief corresponds to a set of possible scenarios. But what are these scenarios, and what properties do they have? This amounts to the question, what would be epistemically possible for an agent who sets all her a posteriori knowledge to one side? This is the question I will address. I’ll offer a solution which recognizes that epistemic concepts are normative, without over-idealizing the reasoning powers of agents. As usual, there will be be a pre-talk or graduate students and other interested parties, in which the background to the talk will be covered. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to attend, especially if they are working in different areas from the talk, as this is the chance to get some breadth so that you'll be able to truly claim some diversity in your graduate education, and get it from leading international philosophers.

The Pre-Talk takes place at 2PM in the Philosophy Common Room.

cheers
d
