Description: What are complexity and emergence? Some reflections on entropy and individuation in toy worlds.

Abstract:
In the mid 1990s Mark Bedau described the phenomenon of weak emergence in terms of computational complexity. This talk introduces the role of information theory in the metaphysically tangled problem of emergence. I will describe an approach to formally characterizing the hunt for emergent properties in the dynamics of coupled networks. I will argue that what we are learning in this project sheds light on the broader metaphysical problem of emergence.
