On counter-nomic objects: motion, plenitude and the laws of nature
Abstract
It is usual to suppose that the domain over which the laws of nature range
is the domain of the concrete objects. Finding a plethora of concrete
objects that are not correctly described by some set of law-like claims
would then be good grounds for supposing that those claims do not express
laws. Recently this has been disputed. This paper will introduce you to
three cases of objects that purportedly behave in counter-nomic ways.
These are objects that purportedly flagrantly flout various dynamical laws
as well as laws about superluminal travel. The standard account accepts
that these objects do behave in these ways, but it contends that the laws
do not apply to objects of a certain class, a class that these objects
belong to. Therefore their existence does not offer a counterexample to any
law. I argue that when we properly understand the relevant laws, we see
that the objects are not really counter-nomic. So there is no need to
divide the domain of objects into those to which the laws apply, and those
to which they do not.
Pre-Talk at 2PM in the Dept Common Room. Honours and Graduate students
especially encouraged to attend.
