Greetings all,
This coming Monday, 1.00-2.30 in the philosophy common room Jack
Justus will talk to us about " The Search for a Formal Criterion of
Empirical Significance: A Reconsideration". This is the penultimate
current projects for this year!
Abstract:
Logical empiricism’s waning popularity and the supposed discovery of
insurmountable technical difficulties led most philosophers to abandon
the project to formulate a formal criterion of empirical significance.
I trace the project’s history, from its inception with Carnap’s
Pseudoproblems to its abandonment, and criticize the reasons it is
thought to have failed. Although early criteria were clearly
inadequate, criticisms made of later, more sophisticated criteria were
often indefensible or easily remedied. Most importantly, Carnap’s last
criterion was seriously misinterpreted and an amended version of it
remains tenable.
