A workshop on Narrative approaches to the self will be held at Macquarie University on the 12th December. Registration is essential, please contact Catriona Mackenzie ([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>) The workshop is jointly organised by Catriona Mackenzie and Richard Menary and is funded by the Centre for Agency, Values and Ethics at MQ and the Philosophy Department at UOW.
Is the self narratively constructed? There are many who would answer yes to the question. Indeed, the importance of narrative to understanding the mind and the self is currently being lavished with attention across the cognitive sciences. A variety of models of the narrative self have been proposed, such as Dennett's abstract fictionalist model. Several other ways of thinking about the narrative self will be explored in this workshop: The development of the narrative self through the modelling of self-other relations (Gallagher); the development of the self through a narrative understanding of what it is to act for a reason (Hutto); The relationship between the narrative self and the embodied agent (Mackenzie, Menary); The narrative self and moral psychology (Murphy, Kennett). 9.00-10.30 Shaun Gallagher (UCF) Narrative Distance and the Landscape of Action in Deceptive Self-Narratives 10.30-11 morning tea 11.45-12.30 Dan Hutto (Hertfordshire) Narrative Self-Shaping: The Role of Reason Understanding 12.30-1.30 lunch 1.30-2.45 Dominic Murphy (Sydney) The Narrative self in Cognitive Science and Moral Psychology 2.45-4.00 Jeanette Kennett (Macquarie) TBA 4.00-4.30 Afternoon tea 4.30-6 Richard Menary (UOW) and Catriona Mackenzie (Macquarie) Embodied Narratives With best wishes, Richard Dr. Richard Menary Senior Lecturer in Philosophy Philosophy Programme Convenor<http://www.uow.edu.au/arts/selpl/philosophy/index.html> Philosophy Research Node Convenor<http://www.capstrans.edu.au/research/ap/index.html> The University of Wollongong Research Seminar<http://phil-gong.blogspot.com/> University Webpage<http://www.uow.edu.au/arts/selpl/philosophy/UOW025977.html> Phil Papers Profile<http://philpapers.org/profile/3332> Books: Cognitive Integration Palgrave Macmillan<http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?PID=275285> and Amazon<http://www.amazon.com/Cognitive-Integration-Mind-Cognition-Unbounded/dp/140398977X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212105196&sr=8-1> The Philosophy of Cognition Acumen<http://www.acumenpublishing.co.uk/results.asp?sf1=author&st1=Richard%20Menary&TAG=&CID=&SORT=sort_title> The Extended Mind (ed.)
