HERMANN HESSE'S "SIDDHARTHA"

Normally we'll start just after 6.30pm, and continue till 8pm-8.30pm. Format is
usually: short speech, then two or three rounds of discussion, with breaks
in-between. Often we'll go to dinner afterwards.

Wikipedia writes: --

"Siddhartha is an allegorical novel by Hermann Hesse which deals with the
spiritual journey of a boy known as Siddhartha from the Indian Subcontinent
during the time of the Buddha.

The book, Hesse's ninth novel, was written in German, in a simple yet powerful
and lyrical style. It was first published in 1922, after Hesse had spent some
time in India in the 1910s. It was published in the U.S. in 1951 and became
influential during the 1960s...

A major preoccupation of Hesse in writing Siddhartha was to cure his 'sickness
with life' (Lebenskrankheit) by immersing himself in Eastern philosophy such as
that expounded in the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. The reason the second
half of the book took so long to write was that Hesse 'had not experienced that
transcendental state of unity to which Siddhartha aspires'. In order to do so,
Hesse lived as a virtual semi-recluse and became totally immersed in the sacred
teachings of both Hindu and Buddhist scriptures."

Location: members bar, The Gaelic Club, 64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills,
Sydney. The location is about 100 metres from a Central railway station exit.
Take the door past the Madison Hotel, and keep winding to the top of the
stairs. Look for a group of people with notepads and books who are taking it in
turns to speak. Usually we'll be armed with the Oxford Companion to Philosophy,
and a bell. Probably we'll be ***out on the terrace***.

No cost. No prerequisite reading. All welcome!

Regards,

Adrian
