Title: PG WIP Seminar: Alex Angel
Philosophy Postgrad Work-In-Progress Seminar
Alex Angel - ‘McDowell’s Liberal Naturalism and Representation’
"........John McDowell’s Mind and World centres upon the idea that the
‘intentionality’ of our thoughts, towards the world, has been problematized
from mistaken ideas of ‘perceptual experience’ and ‘Nature’. Through the
dissolution of philosophical assumptions that manifest an ‘interminable
oscillation’ between unsatisfactory positions (What Wilfred Sellars
describes as ‘The Myth of the Given’ and Davidson’s ‘Coherentism’),
McDowell’s resolution entails the bestowing of conceptual form and content
within perceptual experience itself– ‘that things are thus and so’. Charles
Travis takes issue with McDowell’s claim that experience represents things
as so. For Travis, experience is merely a ‘bringing into view’ and no such
posited mediating representation can fix what in fact is so according to
it. McDowell as a result, revises his notion of the conceptual, and
similarly his conception of experience and its content. But he maintains
the central tenet of Mind and World: that experience is conceptual through
and through. In this way the New McDowell can reiterate that the ‘space of
reasons’ extends to our experience of the world. This raises issues in
respect to passivity, external constraint, the‘ public’ aspect to language,
and the notion of reference in experience. I will use some extracts from
Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations to begin (hopefully) some
discussion to follow..”
Everyone is welcome to attend.
