USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-In-Progress Seminar

Emma Wood - "Objectivity in Ethics"

Monday 29nd of March, 3:30-5:00pm

PLEASE NOTE THE SPECIAL VENUE FOR THIS WEEK'S SEMINAR:
KEVIN LEE ROOM - Quadrangle Building, Level 6 (University of Sydney)

ABSTRACT: Moral facts have come under increasing attack of late. Defenders of
moral facts commonly argue that moral facts are needed to provide ethics with
any objectivity. But attempts by Blackburn, Horgan and Timmons to present
views that combine ethical irrealism with ethical objectivity have challenged
this assumption. The purpose of my paper is to see whether Blackburn, and
Horgan and Timmons are successful in these attempts.

In my critique of Horgan and Timmons, I will examine the plausibility of the
distinction and separation between metaethical relativism and normative
relativism, which they utilise. My critique of Blackburn will examine his
basis for evaluating some moral attitudes as better than others, and whether
this basis is complete without the invocation of facts and moral perception.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

If you would like to present or require further information, please contact
Nick Malpas at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>
The format is 30 minutes for presentations followed by 1 hour of discussion.
Since the primary aim of this seminar is to generate discussion, presentations
need not be particularly polished or formal.
