of Sydney)

Byron Clugston - "Insights and Blindspots of Idealist Logic: a Theological
Compass for the Hegelian Analyst"

A synopsis of my project:
1. A reading is given of the role of schematic representation and symbolic
representation in Kant’s philosophy that shows the limitation of his conception
of reason and cognition. The route through the terrain is distinguished from
the beginning as involving considerations for both theoretical and practical
reason.
2. An interpretation of both Kant and Hegel’s conceptions of representation and
content is offered which highlights continuities and differences between their
conceptions of reason and cognition. This strategy is the genesis of comparing
Kant and Hegel’s metaphysics and its application for theoretical and practical
reason.
3. An analysis is given of Hegel’s reflections on the role of feeling,
representation and thought in religious thinking; one which highlights the
peculiar features of his understanding of reason and cognition. This elaborates
upon features of Hegel’s metaphysics of thought as adumbrated in Chapter 2.
4. An analysis is given of the functions of recognition, normativity and
content in Hegel’s conception of religious imagery. This extends the results on
Chapter 3 to a variety of issues faced by Hegel’s idealism.
5. An analysis is given of the nature of religious imagery as a morphology of
“Absolute” Knowing. This involves further elaborating its syllogistic
structure, as first presented in Chapter 2 and extended in Chapters 3 and
especially 4. One main task is that of explaining what the structure of
“Absolute Knowing” is; what its place in the shapes of Geist is. This completes
the analysis of Hegel’s idealism.
6. A short Appendix is attached which elaborates the significance of some of
the ideas investigated for contemporary Hegelianism in analytic philosophy; the
future of Hegelian analysis.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

If you would like to present or require further information, please contact
