Title: PG WIP Seminar: Rob Dennis
USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-In-Progress Seminar

Rob Dennis: "The Origins and Contestability of Modern Reason"

Rob will outline his thesis for us:
"The task of this thesis is a threefold one: first, to critically examine some important attempts to legitimate certain modern views of reason by appealing to their emergence in early modern thought; second, to inquire whether a more plausible non-relativistic account of reason can be given which allows for a genuine progress of reason without treating naturalism as an a priori truth or as an inevitable consequence of all specifically modern thought; the major difficulty for such an account will be to accommodate some role for the notion of objectivity without denying the context-dependent and value-dependent character of reasoning, at least when it is reasoning about comprehensive views of the world; third, to point out some of the implications which this inquiry has for contemporary philosophical frameworks, particularly those based on naturalism and an autonomous conception of the individual, whose claim to authority and superiority is more dependent on a historical justification of some aspects of early modern thought than is often recognized. It will argue that the case for grounding the superiority of naturalism and secularism in early modern thought is not as straightforward and unproblematic as is often supposed."

Everyone is welcome to attend.

If you would like to present or require further information, please contact Nick Malpas at [email protected] The format is 30 minutes for presentations followed by 1 hour of discussion.
